What is Diabetes?
Diabetes happens when your body isn't able to take up sugar (glucose) into its cells and use it for energy. This results in a buildup of extra sugar in your bloodstream. Poorly controlled diabetes can lead to serious consequences, causing damage to a wide range of your body's organs and tissues – including your heart, kidneys, eyes and nerves.
Types of Diabetes:
• Type 1 diabetes: This type is an autoimmune disease, meaning your body attacks itself. In this case, the insulin-producing cells in your pancreas are destroyed. Up to 10% of people who have diabetes have Type 1
• Type 2 diabetes: With this type, your body either doesn’t make enough insulin or your body’s cells don’t respond normally to the insulin. This is the most common type of diabetes. Up to 95% of people with diabetes have Type
• Prediabetes: This type is the stage before Type 2 diabetes. Your blood glucose levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be officially diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.
• Gestational diabetes: This type develops in some women during their pregnancy. Gestational diabetes usually goes away after pregnancy.

Dietitian helps in your Diabetes in next level up
An RDN who is a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist, or CDCDES, educates people with diabetes on how to manage their condition and improve their health outcomes.
Your diabetes dietitian will usually work as part of your healthcare team. They will help you improve your knowledge and confidence in managing your diabetes. Your diabetes dietitian may work with you one-to-one or in a group, often as part of a diabetes education programmed.
• They will help you to understand how your diet affects your diabetes and to consider the options available to you, then make a plan so that you can make changes to achieve your goals.
• Your dietitian may also be able to adjust or prescribe any diabetes medications you need
• A dietitian will complete an assessment that includes asking you about your medical history, reviewing your current weight, checking results from tests (such as your blood glucose and cholesterol levels), your dietary needs and preferences, and your activity levels.
Diabetes and Diet
• It is important that any dietary advice is tailored to your individual needs. An Accredited Practicing Dietitian (APD) will consider personal health and lifestyle influences and help to separate the facts from the myths surrounding diet and diabetes.
Some common dietary myths that are not correct include:
• People with diabetes should eliminate all food containing carbohydrate
• People with diabetes need to avoid all sugar completely
• People with diabetes need to eat mostly foods high in protein and fat.
